Candidate speaks out on Pensions

6.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 24th Apr 2009

The Parliamentary Candidate for the Liberal Democrats in Scarborough and Whitby spoke out on Wednesday about the unfairness in the British Pension system. Tania Exley-Moore was invited to speak at the Filey and Scarborough Older People's Forum, held at the Westborough Methodist Church.

The meeting was attended by some 50 of the town's older people and Tania spoke out about the lack of fairness in a pension system where increases are not in line with increases in wages. She outlined Lib Dem policy to bring Pension increases in line with wage increases. She also spoke about the need to introduce a means tested Local Income Tax to replace the current Council Tax and to force fuel companies to invest their windfalls into the reduction of fuel bills and to reverse the current system where high fuel users pay less per unit than low users. She pointed out that together these measures would raise thousands of pensions above the poverty line.
