Whitby Residents up in arms over East Pier

4.00.00am GMT Wed 3rd Feb 2010

Whitby residents are up in arms over the lack of forthcoming funds to repair the East Pier and replace its link bridge. Whitby's Lib Dem PPC Tania Exley-Moore has been receiving complaints from residents over the raw deal Whitby has had from Scarborough Borough Council.

"It's outrageous that Whitby has been waiting for the the link bridge for a number of years now." said Tania.

"There is need for £2m of urgent repairs but there is as much as £20m needed to be spent on Whitby's piers over the next 10 years. I have been advised by sources that because of 35 years of neglect by SBC it has meant that repair costs are going to be higher than they ever needed to be."

"I can understand why Whitby residents feel aggrieved when they are still waiting for their East Pier to be repaired and yet millions have been found to develop Scarborough's West Pier, not to mention the £6m that was found to invest in community projects in the Scarborough area. Whitby is responsible for bringing in a lot of revenue to our borough. It must not be treated like a poor relation!"
